Vaginal lubricants: the effective cure for vaginal dryness pain

For some women, it is a sensitive matter to seek help when they experience vaginal dryness. Not asking for help because of embarrassment is, certainly, very common. Nonetheless, the good news is that the solution is easy: it consists in using vaginal lubricants (1). This product is usually sold in various forms and ingredients, and is designed to satisfy the multiple needs of each woman. Read on to find out which one is adequate for you.

The role of vaginal lubricants

All women may experience vaginal dryness at any moment. Although menopause is the stage when this topic is most discussed, its prevalence is not particular to such life period. You may also encounter it due to some of the following reasons (2,3):

During menopause, hormonal changes affect the vaginal tissue. Due to the decrease in oestrogen and progesterone production by the ovaries, vaginal walls change. For example, they may become thinner, less flexible, and less elastic (4).

Additionally, natural vaginal wetness is deficient in this period, so there is a decrease in mucus production. This can result in painful intercourse, discomfort with underwear, and discomfort in your V-zone (4).

It is necessary, therefore, to use vaginal lubricants designed particularly for such a delicate tissue. Lubrication facilitates intercourse, reduces the friction of the vaginal mucosa, and promotes female orgasm. In this manner, it can decrease irritation and pain. Moreover, the lack of lubrication can prevent that the vagina is adequately cleansed, which results in bacterial or yeast infections (1)

Types of vaginal lubricants: advantages and disadvantages

You can find available lubricants differenced by textures, colours, scents, flavours, and materials, all of which can satisfy individual needs. These lubricants replace the natural secretions of the vagina and relieve discomfort. They have been designed to let women enjoy the benefits of sex, without the uneasiness associated with menopausal changes.

Now, let us introduce you the types of vaginal lubricants (2,3,4)

  • Water-based lubricants: this is usually the best choice, especially if you use condoms. They work well with latex and do not break it. This type of lubricant is a good choice as well if you are prone to vaginal infections such as candidiasis. Particularly, they are water-based, mostly absorbed, and quite safe. Although less slippery than the silicone ones, more accessibility due to low prices is on their behalf.
  • Oil-based lubricants: these can cause problems with latex and silicone. Although they are oil-based, you should not confuse them with other oily substances. It is not advisable to use products in the vagina such as petroleum jelly, fats, baby oil, cosmetic oils, or cream. If they are not designed for this particular purpose, they predispose you to vaginal yeast and bacterial infections.
  • Silicone-based lubricants: they last longer than other vaginal lubricants because they cannot be absorbed by the body. Its properties include water resistance, a longer-lasting effect, and being highly slippery. This can provide a better sensation during intercourse. However, they are more difficult to remove, as you will need to wash the residues with plenty of soap and water, potentially irritating the skin in your erogenous zones. Finally, you should remember that they cannot be used with silicone toys.

How to choose the right lubricant for you?

Every woman has different needs and preferences. When choosing between various vaginal lubricants, you should consider the following aspects (4):

  • Type of lubricant.
  • Price.
  • Ingredients (this is mandatory if you are allergic to any of them).
  • Use of condoms or sex toys.

You should ideally evaluate your needs and use additional materials, such as condoms or sex toys, to stimulate your erogenous zones. For this reason, it is necessary to try a few vaginal lubricants until you find the right one for you (4).

Get a better experience during intercourse

Remember that if you want to enjoy the benefits of sex, simply using lubricant will not be enough. Especially, if you are already going through menopause. The stimulation of the female G spot, and even aphrodisiac foods, can help you get a better experience (5)

Also, although vaginal lubricants are available over-the-counter, it is advisable to consult with your gynaecologist before choosing any of them. Doing so is essential if you have any other symptoms besides vaginal dryness. Do not wait any longer to find out if this is the solution you need to face the challenges of it. Regain comfort and improve your intimate quality of life.
